Autónoma loop again. I'm starting to feel a noticeable improvement in my running. Today a group of runners entered the main trail just ahead of me and were going at more or less my pace. Decided to try to pass them by upping the cadence on the Fives and blew by them with no problems on a hill. A bit later there is a bit you have to walk - basically there are steps down to a small bridge over a stream and then up again. After I had just reentered the trail a runner blasted past me so decided to chase him. Kept up with no effort but he lost me after about a mile when I had to slow down for a very gravelly patch. It literally felt like having another gear to switch up into.

I'm starting to think that the barefoot/fivefinger thing is 50% mental . Although the physical side - improved running form etc. is clearly important - I also feel much more in touch with the running and am not getting bored which has been a big problem for me in the past. I didn't have the GPS with me today so I have no idea if I actually have improved my pace, or what it was during the two roughly 3/4 mile sprints...but it certainly felt much better and if not much faster, I felt a lot stronger. With conventional running shoes I have never really been able to improve my performance significantly, even without injuries. This type of "pose" running seems to be the key.

It might all be wishful thinking but at least it's fun!

On another note - I managed to hold a conversation with the Portero in the Residencia about cleaning schedules, when the sheets and towels get changed, and how to connect to the internet entirely in Spanish. Not great Spanish but they didn't try to switch into English - maybe they didn't speak English but in any case it felt like a minor victory. Then I had to go to the bank because my Caja Madrid ATM card stopped working yesterday - again, the transaction was conducted entirely in Spanish. I am thinking that I have the Fives to thank for that too but maybe that's a step too far :-)

How long have you been working on barefoot/5-fingers? I have recently decided to do the same, after my last marathon (Ogden). I bought some trail shoes recommended by the Chi Running web-site (New Balance MR-790 - quite a change from Asics 2130s). It's been quite enjoyable, for the first time I enjoy running without music as a distraction! Are the 5-fingers worth it? Do you recommend the KSOs?

Jason,

Well, I switched directly from the NB 817s into fivefingers about 3 weeks ago and I absolutely love them. It was hard on the calves at first but in a good sense - they felt like I'd done a really good workout - which I had. The more I use the Fives the more I like them and really want to go the whole hog to barefoot on various surfaces.

I can't compare them to your shoes but I have run in racing flats and, to be honest, nothing feels as "different" as the Fives. Check out Redrooster's blog for some more in-depth discussion - also barefootrunner.com. The book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall is what got us into this, but Sasha on this board has over 2K miles on his Fives and also has a lot of experience with flats, like 2K miles on those as well!

I like the KSOs because they have some extra protection on the top of the foot and, most importantly, a strap (as do the Sprints).

It sounds like you are pretty happy with the MR-790s. A possible way to judge the difference between them and the Fives without buying the Fives might be to find a really soft grassy area and run barefoot on that and then do the same in the 790s. I tried that and the Fives are an excellent approximation to barefoot in terms of how the foot strikes, etc. They are not like barefoot in terms of how the foot senses the surface. But if the 790s feel a lot different than barefoot then I suspect that the KSOs would be closer to true barefoot.

I'd be interested to hear about your progress and what you decide to do. I'll keep an eye on your blog.

All the best,

I just checked out the MR790s, they look to be just what I am looking for in a trail shoe- low heel, light, minimalist. am going to get a pair!

Unfortunately my foot and leg are still giving me problems so I think I am going to have to take a running break before I can continue my five finger experiment. I think I need to start fresh with a healthy leg and foot, right now I still have problems that need to recover. which means no summer races or TOU this year, but I hope I can get healthy and get a fresh start in August. I will just get fat and lazy until then!

Rooster, I doubt you could fat even if you tried, but that sounds like a good idea. There's no point making the injury worse and, in the process, have a bad experience with new shoes which are supposed to help with injuries.

The swimming will keep you in shape and maybe if you take the summer off from running, and I don't, I might be able to keep up with you for 1/2 a mile or so!

So far so good with injuries in the 5s - I have sort of blister on one heel but it isn't very painful, more like dead skin which I'm assuming is the start of callous formation.

Roc,

Thanks for the advice. I have run a few miles barefoot - 1 on the quad and 4 on a track and 1 on LHS's football field - quite a workout for the calves. The first time I ran on the artificial turf, I thought it was very rough, but yesterday it seemed so soft. I guess that the 2 miles on the track the day before toughened my feet up a bit.

Rooster,

If you get the NB MR-790s, make sure to get them a 1/2 size larger than most other shoes (at least any Asics) and right now they are cheapest (that I could find) at http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3020405?cm_cat=datafeed&cm_pla=shoes:men:athletic&cm_ite=new_balance_%27mr790%27_running_shoe_(men):186883_2&cm_ven=Froogle&mr:trackingCode=158E2BF8-5619-DE11-B0EA-001422107090&mr:referralID=NA

Was: $74.95

Now: $44.90

40% OFF but they only have a few sizes...

Jason- thanks- awesome deal- and they had my size (11) so I ordered a pair!

Once I can get my leg healed I will give em a shot on the river trail

David- it appears I do have a stress fracture in my foot from the winter training so I am calling it quits for 4 weeks or so. Then I am going to start up slow again, minimalist approach. I am convinced the rigid cushioned shoes killed my leg. we nned to start the Logan barefoot club this fall.
